It has been far too long since I posted anything about my knitting or spinning. The entire Christmas season went by without any posts. I have a couple more finished objects and a few other started projects I could post about. Instead I will post about new stuff!
First I got some great gifts from DJ and Mr. DJ. First off, a set of Knit Picks sock needles! I am very excited. It goes from 2.00 to 3.25 in .25 mm increments. That means it includes two different size 1 and two different size 2 needle sets. This should help make sure I have the right size for making socks.
They also gave me 2 sock yarns (from Bahr Creek Llamas). One of which made a perfect traveling project.
Yes, traveling. I am back from a work thing. Yes, it was over a weekend. And yes, it is back to work tomorrow. I did, however, fit in 3 yarn store trips. These gave me good chance to see Philadelphia and a good opportunity to stretch my legs and perhaps walk off a few of the desserts.
On Friday, I went to Loop. They have a great selection of Koigu Painter’s Palette Premium Merino. I bought some for socks (which seems really over the top). My very thrifty (or is she just cheap?) roommate SL was scandalized by the price of the yarn that I bought — and also the amount.
I also saw Noro Kureyon Sock yarn for the first time. I kept being drawn to the hot pink and lime green. Every time I tried to get something in my colors, it just didn’t grab me. So, DJ will be getting more socks.
They also had Araucania Ranco sock yarn. I had never heard of it and it was on sale. So, TH needed socks too…
This should have been enough. But I had a meeting right after lunch only about 6 blocks from Rosie’s Yarn Cellar. I also had a bit left over from the food I brought for the plane and who really needs lunch when you can spend your lunch money and more on yarn? They had many lovely yarns as well, but I finally settled on two yarns from The Fibre Company, which I had never heard of. I was really tempted by Autumn Harvest Knightsbridge but decided to go with Khroma WW instead for a hat for me.
I was trying to convince myself that I needed both, but then I saw Terra. It is totally not my colors but I love it. It reminds me of shot silk. It also reminds me of part of a costume I wore back in the 80s. I wore very shiny, opaque turquoise tights with very sheer purple nylons over them. It looked really great. I would have worn the combo to work (yes, back in the days when I arranged to meet a friend of a friend by wearing fishnets so he’d know who I was). Unfortunately, I got a really bad run in the purple and I didn’t find replacements.
After shopping I called DJ to ask if she needed another hat. She said maybe. I told her it was really cool yarn. She asked what color. I tried describing it and asked if she needed it. She still wasn’t very helpful and indicated that it might be nice, but wasn’t going to use the word need. I then told her I was walking through/under city hall calling her and that she wasn’t doing a very good job helping me excuse my purchase. What good is she? (And why does she deserve this yarn?)
This really was quite sufficient. However, that night I ran into an acquaintance who was raving about a 3rd yarn store, Sophie’s Yarns . The next day I gave up another lunch. The walk was longer, but through the historic district, so very enjoyable. The store is nice (and has a cat I got to pet), but I wasn’t as excited by it. It carried yarn more similar to that in my LYS, and I had already overspent. But I hadn’t seen Cascade Venezia Worsted before. And since I hadn’t bought hat yarn yet for TH…
I guess that’s enough for now.
